Looking Ahead - Meche & Pineiro

As the season winds down, I find that I really don't have much motivation to write about the current string of games. It's nice to see the M's kicking ass, but quite frankly it's too little and too late to make any difference. Instead, I would prefer to focus on next season.

The M's face lots of decisions this Winter. Two of them are named Meche and Pineiro. These should be easy decisions - let them walk. Neither of these guys has shown anything this season that makes me believe that they have "turned the corner". So when it comes to Meche and Pineiro, just say no.

I agree with you on this one! The pathetic thing is, whom would you like to see in the rotation that would be a step up from what they currently have. I haven't been overly impressed by a lot of the call ups thus far, but maybe impressive is overrated? Look at Jaime Moyer! He wasn't impressive but he gave you innings and wins. Baek has been the most consistent so far, but he's not an innings eater, and neither is Woods. With the cost of starting pitching looking like it is escalating exponentially, will the M's be players or simply sit back and find the guy who will take the least (washburn). I think they have to do something pretty quick, because their fan base is getting antsy. I think it's time to shake things up, maybe even do something drastic. This team needs a winning attitude, or someone who can instill that. Guess we are waiting till next year, to find out what happens.

Actually, Larry, Baek has bounced back quite a bit, and is the very definition of 'innings eater' -- a la Ryan Franklin. Indeed he's been shut down for the rest of the year, but it shouldn't affect him for 2007. He showed the M's that he can handle the bigs again, and should be a surprising addition to the rotation in '07.

If the money's right -- i.e. something along the lines of 3/$21 -- I'd probably resign Meche, as awful as that sounds. It's a damned-if-ya-do-damned-if-ya don't scenario, likely. But while everyone's putting their eggs in Dice-K's basket, what happens if a)he isn't posted or b)someone else gets him? The M's still have two holes in their rotation to fill, and I'd probably make Meche a plan B, if the money's right.

Larry - they are going to have to sign at least 1 TOR guy - and 2 would be even better.

Paul - I think Baek will be just fine as a # 4 or 5. Meche, however, must go. I just don't see him attaining any semblance of reliability. Of course, this still leaves the question on the table of who the rotation will consist of. Hopefully Mr. Bavasi will be able to pull a rabbit out of his hat!!
