What I'm Reading

It's been a while since I've plugged my favorite author, Jeff Angus. Take a look over at Management By Baseball at this article (first of a series) that discusses Ichiro! and his move to CF.

Err... except that he's wrong. Ichiro hadn't regularly started in or played center field since 1996-1997; lineups show him starting in right field for almost every game in his last few seasons. And he only played a handful of games in left ever... something like, maybe 10 games out of the 1000+ he was in. I'll go try to get exact numbers, this is just from looking at the 1990's Bluewave lineups.

Interesting. Let me know what you find out.

I used the lineups from here:
http://www.geocities.co.jp/Athlete-Athene/3320/order/index.html

I wrote up a Perl script and it found the following information. It had him as a starter in 857 total games.

Ichiro started 24 games in left field, 225 in center, and 608 in right.

He started 311 games in leadoff, 40 batting second, 399 batting third and 107 in cleanup.

All of the left field starts were in 1998.

He started 84 games in center in 1994, 69 in 1995, 45 in 1996, 18 in 1997... and then only 7 in 1998 and 2 in 1999, none in 2000, his last year there.

I'm going to write a bit more about this on my blog later tonight or during the weekend.
