Down To The Wire

It's official(maybe), Jamie Burke gets the nod as the backup catcher. Geoff Baker also reports that Jeremy Reed, Eric O'Flaherty and Sean Green were optioned to Tacoma. I'm happy that Burke made the team. A few more decisions to be made - will Morrow make the big club?

Update: Here's Jeff Sullivan's take on the 2007 season: "Your three-year sabbatical may be over, but your half-decade of irrelevance isn't."

Additional Update: Larry Stone opines concerning Ichiro! and his walk year.

Further update: John McGrath in the TNT concerning what happened to Jeremy Reed.

Baker On The Starters

Geoff Baker does some analysis of the Mariners starting staff today over at the Times Blog. Good stuff - and I think he's about on target when he says this will be a .500-ish club.

Morrow In Or Out?

One of the most interesting questions remaining this Spring (at least in my mind) is whether Brandon Morrow will make the big club as a reliever, or start the year in the rotation in AA. There's been quite a bit of discussion in the blogosphere concerning the relative merits of each course of action. For me, I would much prefer to see Morrow with the big club - they've made the bullpen a lot weaker than it should have been, and here's a nice in-house solution to that problem. Time will tell - opening day is almost here.

A Season Of Ifs

Going into the 2007 campaign, there are many ifs surrounding the Mariners. One of the biggest ifs to me is if Felix Hernandez will become the number one starter that we all have been hoping for. So far this Spring, the results are mixed. Check out Geoff Baker's latest blog entry - he seems to share some of my concern. Yesterday's appearance by The King did remind me of quite a few of his outings last year - too many pitches early and out by the 5th. Not a winning combination.

Edit: By the way, be sure and check out this bit of hilarity from the irrepressible Jeff Sullivan.

Spring 2007

So we're 10 games into the 2007 Cactus League schedule and I'm not really hopeful about the season. Yeah, I know it's early. Yeah, I know that Spring Training games don't matter. But listen, the M's have stunk for three years running, and it's going to take a little more than what I've seen so far to convince me that they are going to win the AL West this year. Okay, it's going to take a little more than what I've seen so far to convince me that they aren't headed for another last place finish. Although it was nice to see them kick the snot out of the Angels. :D

Too Early To Panic?

Hopefully you've been reading Geoff Baker's fine blog over at The Times as he chronicles Spring Training down in Peoria this year. It's only been three games, but the Mariners seem to be doing two things regularly on offense - grounding into double plays and not hitting with runners in scoring position. It probably is a little too early to really be concerned, but given the recent history of this club, I hope that the trend doesn't continue.
