Power Surge

What's up with the offense these days? I'm in danger of getting used to this double digit run production. Say what you will about the Mariners, but they definitely whipped Anaheim last night.

Managed to catch the relief appearance of Rafael Soriano as the Braves were beating Milwaukee yesterday. He was dealing - high cheese - hitters had NO chance. I'm just sayin'.

Dave On Ichiro!

Dave over at USS Mariner has written an outstanding article concerning Ichiro! today that you should really go read right now. It's always amazed me when fans blame Ichiro! for what's wrong with the ballclub. He's the most talented, elite player that the club has. He's not what's wrong with this team. Enjoy him now - because I'm afraid that 2007 will be the last season that we have the pleasure of seeing him perform in a Mariner uniform. *sigh*

Monday Roundup

So what happened to my optimism? The Mariners happened - trailing the Angels by 5 games and not being able to win a series from the Padres. It's not only me - check out Geoff Baker over at The Times, or Dave over at USS Mariner. The bottom line - start winning some ballgames or it's going to be another last place finish.

On an unrelated note, saw a cool article in the Kitsap Sun by Terry Mosher concerning my favorite ex-Mariner.

Reasons To Be Optimistic

I'm finding more reasons to be optimistic about this team every day. Larry Stone lists a good number of these reasons over at The Times this morning. I'll say the following:

  • The offense has been pretty good - and looks like it's getting better (Ichiro! comes alive).
  • The bullpen has been nothing short of amazing - Morrow and O'Flaherty have been big (and pleasant) surprises.
  • Washburn has been awesome so far.
  • King Felix is back.
  • Series win vs. Yankees. Yes!
  • Rest of AL West not very good.

Happy Felix Day!

It certainly feels like summer in the Seattle area today, and not only because the temperature is in the 80's! Felix makes his return tonight - and hopefully a triumphant return.

Geoff Baker writes a nice piece in his blog concerning the team and its current standing. Worth a read.

Keeping Things In Perspective

With three summers in a row of losing ballclubs, it's been difficult for me to keep things in perspective this year. However, the games played this weekend at Safeco Field have once again reminded me that no matter how rough the last three years have been, the current season still holds lots of promise. The Mariners ended up the weekend with a series win against the Yankees - and that's not a bad thing. The club is over .500 and playing good baseball (mostly). And Felix will be back on Tuesday!

So Now What?

I haven't posted recently because I really don't know what to think about this team, let alone what to write about them. Some days the offense looks pretty good - other days not. The starting pitching has been a problem - and appears that it will continue to be so. At least King Felix is due to come back next week - but not sure that he can be expected to carry the entire load. My optimism is fading fast...

Snelling To A's

I suppose this was inevitable. Check out Dave's awesome post over at USS Mariner this morning for some perspective on this issue. As usual, Dave provides the cutting insight and analysis. Hey, at least we'll get to see a bit more of Snelling since he's back on the West Coast! P.I. link
