On Or Off?

In a comment on a previous post, my friend Larry mentioned that he had one foot on the bandwagon and the other foot off. That's a great description of my own feelings regarding the Mariners at this point in time. One part of me wants to get really excited and dare to think about the playoffs. Another part of me is certain that they will disappoint me (yet again). I think Geoff Baker is right when he says that the current series will pretty much determine whether the Mariners are contenders or pretenders. Off to a good start - let's see where we are in 2 days time.

Looks as if the trading deadline is going to pass without any action for the Mariners. For once, I think it's a good thing. Please don't make any deals for relievers!! Now if you can find a way to get Carlos Silva....

What A Difference A Week Makes

One week ago, I was entertaining serious thoughts of this team making a playoff run. This week, not so much. Another road trip to Texas ends badly (been *there* before) and a 7 game skid has brought me firmly back to earth. These are the Mariners that I have grown accustomed to watching over the past 3 seasons. The ones that can't score a run. The ones that can't hold a lead in the late innings. The ones that don't win. Let's hope the GM can make a trade soon - otherwise I'm afraid that the summer just got a little longer.

1.5 Games Back

I've actually stayed away from the blog lately - afraid that I might get a little too wound up posting about the M's - but screw that! Can you believe that they are actually only 1.5 games off the division lead? I just can't say enough about how much fun it is to watch this team again. And as Jeff over at Lookout Landing would say - "Putz - wooooooo!!".

At The Break

To say that I am positively giddy concerning the Mariners these days would be an understatement. Not only do they have a shot at the AL Wild Card, they have (at least in my opinion) a very legitimate shot at winning the AL West. Who would have thunk it just a month ago?

Larry Stone says Ichiro! is ready to sign a 5 year extension, reportedly worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million!! Wow! I'm so happy.

Geoff Baker grades Bavasi. Geoff is the best sportswriter going - make sure you read this piece.

The first half of the season has had more plot twists than you can shake a stick at. Good Felix - Bad Felix - Hargrove leaves - Bad Weaver - Good Weaver - J.J emerges as elite closer - injuries - slumps - streaks (good and bad) - you name it. But I've got to tell you, I'm as excited about this team right now as I was back in 2001. Go M's!!

Adios Grover - Win Streak Continues!

My brother-in-law called me yesterday afternoon from Arizona and told me about Mike Hargrove's resignation. I had been busy all day and hadn't had a chance to see any news - so of course the info surprised me. I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth - so thanks Grover. Best of luck in future endeavors.

The ballclub just continues to amaze me every day. 10-2 homestand. 8 in a row. 12 games over .500. You just have to sit back and enjoy the ride at this point. And put me down in the "do what it takes to get Buehrle" camp. What an awesome upgrade that would be. Be calm.
