Good News - Bad News

The bad news is here

The good news is that the M's have signed Robinson Cano.

Happy about Cano, not so happy about how bad the FO may really be.

Why I Am Pissed At The Seattle Mariners

I'll get around to telling you why I'm pissed at the Seattle Mariners - but first a bit of background.

I moved to the Seattle area in the Fall of 1994.  I was still in the Navy, and had been stationed in the Bay Area for the previous 7 years.  I was a big fan of the Giants and A's - those teams in the late 80's and early 90's were remarkable.  Remember how the Giants won 103 in 1993 and didn't even make the playoffs?  Remember the Bash Bros?  We even attended what turned out to be the last game of the 1994 season at the Coliseum, which happened to be against the Seattle Mariners.  Randy Johnson pitched a stellar game, but I digress.  So it was shortly after that when I found out that I was being transferred to the Seattle area - just in time for the magical season in 1995.

So what a treat to move to a new city and have the baseball team have such an incredible run.  I was hooked.  In the following years, there were a few more playoff appearances, and then the 2001 season.  Since then, things have been going downhill.  During the 2013 season, I did not attend a game at Safeco Field.  I might have watched 2 or 3 games on TV.  In short, the Mariners have worn down the fan in me - and I'm not optimistic that anything will improve anytime soon.  I do hope that the franchise gets things turned around sooner rather than later.  But I'm pissed that they have destroyed the baseball fan in me.

Update:  Guess I'm not the only one - see this post over at USS Mariner by the illustrious DMZ.

2013 Season Over

Well another disappointing season for the Seattle Mariners is in the books.  This one had a rather bizarre plot twist at the end - Eric Wedge quits and then calls out the GM as a liar.  Still no hitting, along with poor defense and a mostly ineffective bullpen are the highlights of another "rebuilding" season.  I find myself in agreement with many who have said that the only way this club will ever get turned around is if they are sold to a local ownership group.  It should be interesting to see what Jack Z. and his handlers have to say about the season - and what their plan is moving forward.

Why The Pirates Should Make You Happy

Dave Cameron has another excellent article posted over at USS Mariner today that should make you happy as an M's fan.  Oh, and it should also make you mad.  As the season winds down to another disaster, there is some hope out there - assuming that the ball club makes some intelligent decisions over the Winter.

Saw this blurb in the Times today:

"• Former Mariner Wladimir Balentien hit his 53rd home run of the season for Yakult to move within two of Japanese baseball’s season record."  *sigh*  So I thought I better check it out - and here's confirmation.  Wow!

Update 9/12:  Record tied!!

Update 9/16:  New Record Holder!

The Mariners Suck

Listen to this podcast from Matthew and Jeff - this sums up my feelings concerning the Mariners.  Good job guys!!  :-)

Here We Go Again

It's a couple of weeks into the new season, and I'm already getting that same old sinking feeling, like "here we go again".  After getting swept by the Rangers in Arlington, I'm afraid that the M's are heading for irrelevance (thanks Larry Stone!) in April!  Not much else to say except "MEH!".

A Sad Day For The M's Blogosphere

Just read about Jeff Sullivan calling it quits at Lookout Landing.  It's a sad day - I quite vividly remember reading Jeff's work at Leone for Third - he only got better as Lookout Landing ramped up.  He always brought a smile to my face - will miss you Jeff.

Welcome Back Mike Morse

So Mike Morse is once again a Mariner.  Lots of reaction to the trade - Larry Stone takes a measured approach - Dave Cameron, well not so much.  As for me, I'm okay with this move.  Morse can hit, although it is pretty scary watching him patrol the OF.  I liked Jaso a lot, but I am actually happy with the addition of another MOTO bat.  Just hoping that Jaso won't be a Mariner killer - but feeling that he probably will.

Will The Deal Still Get Done?

Larry Stone provides a wealth of information concerning the M's attempt to trade for Justin Upton.  Dave Cameron chimes in with his read of the situation.  I think there is a chance that this deal still gets done - the M's just need to make Upton one of those "can't refuse" offers.  At least the team is trying to do something to improve.

Was sad to see Edgar treading water in the HOF balloting.  Also very sad to see Biggio and Bagwell get denied.  Not so sure about Bonds and the Rocket, but I'm leaning toward saying yes to both.  They were both dominant players - to pretend that they never played is pretty lame.  Probably time for the HOF to take a look at the process - the BBWA clearly failed this year.

Happy 2013!  Before the HOF results are announced today, I wanted to link to this piece by Arne Christensen that expounds on the all around awesomeness that was Edgar Martinez.

Also wanted to say that although I haven't posted lately, I've been watching the developments (or lack thereof) closely over the winter.  I still believe that there must be a plan in place - the moves made by the club so far don't really add up.  Definitely trying to remain positive and keep an open mind, but time is running short.  If the club is planning to do something else before Spring Training starts they had better get on the ball!!
